Summary:
On Oct. 12, 1888, a large fire of suspicious origin broke out on Main Street near First Street. One of the businesses found burning was full of ammunition and gunpowder and several large explosions rocked the area. The Fort Worth Fire Department responded to the scene. One of the firefighters responding was a man known locally as William Heffron. During the course of fighting the fire, Heffron fell 18 feet through an awning and landed on the sidewalk. After several days, Heffron was found to be gravely injured.
The Star-Telegram reported at the time of Heffron's death in 1913, that when Heffron was initially injured, he had received a head injury that resulted in partial paralysis. The Dallas Morning News report on June 16, 1913 attributed the cause of death to this injury described as a "stroke of paralysis".
At the time of the reported death, the newspapers for the first time reported the true name of Heffron; that name being Blake.
