NOTE:
The 1908 Fort Worth Police orders regulated that no officer could keep a uniform at his residence, and that uniforms had to be kept at the Central and Local Police Stations. Also, earlier research indicates that the duty hours for Police Officers in Fort Worth was from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m. hrs during the era of 1915 thru the early 1920's. Based on this order and subsequent research, it is my opinion that Officer Warren was on duty, and was either returning to the station to change into his civilian clothes or was taking a short break.
On May 7, 1919, at around 6:00 a.m. and near the end of his shift on duty, Officer Sterling Price "Dick" Warren went to the "Gamewell Call Box" located on Boaz Street near it's intersection with Front Street and called in to the Central Police Station. There was a heavy downpour of rain, and often, foot patrolmen such as Warren would call in for a break and would often go home to have a meal.
After making the call, Warren stood by at his post near the call box, waiting for a streetcar. Whether Warren was going home on break or was to return to the station is unknown. No police officials ever issued a statement in that regard. What is known that when a streetcar did approach, Warren ran from the cover of an awning to board the car. Officer Warren did not see another streetcar coming from the opposite direction. Officer Warren was struck by that car and killed instantly.
The following day, the Chief of Police selected men to be Officer Warren's pallbearers, and he was given an official department funeral. Officer Warren had worked for the department in past years, but had only recently begun working again in a relief capacity. On the day before he was killed, Officer Warren had been rehired as a regular officer.
