Summary:
George Herbert Buckland Sr., joined the Fort Worth Fire Department Nov. 4, 1929. He worked at Station 20 on Meadowbrook at Oakland for about 2 weeks. Buckland was then transferred to Station 19 at Six-Points in Riverside. He was made a driver (now called Engineer) the first day at this station and performed these duties up to and including the day he fell dead.
On Dec. 11, George Buckland Sr., had been to a car fire and had been feeling bad when they left the station. The fire was a car fire on a car that went into the ditch, set its tires on fire spinning. He pumped for the red line and told one of the firemen that the tire smoke made it hard to breathe.
Arriving back at the station, Buckland stepped off the truck and asked one of the young firemen to watch the hose stuck in the booster tank, that his stomach was bothering him and he did not feel good and was going to sit down. The fireman went inside the station for a moment and returned a few minutes later to check on the hose and on George Buckland. The young fireman later related to the family that as he opened the screen door and looked, George Buckland slid off the bench into the floor.
Buckland was quickly taken to an area hospital, but they were never able to revive him.
These facts have been related by the family members of George Buckland Sr., and discussed at length with Jim Noah. No newspaper accounts of this fire have been found.
