On April 7, 1920, Officer Gresham was working his beat in the area known as "Irish Town." That evening, he encountered a man under the influence of narcotics. The
man was armed and was shooting at pedestrians and cars. One woman was wounded and the man escaped.
On April 8, Officer Gresham was again on his beat. After telephoning the station, he began walking to a streetcar location to go home for the day. While en route, he noticed the man from the previous day crouched by a telephone pole. When he shined his flashlight on the man, the man opened fire, shooting Officer Gresham three times. Officer Gresham died at the scene.
