Summary:
On Oct. 21, 1916, Fort Worth Police Captain George Francis Conant spent a day conducting surveillance in an alley, waiting for a suspect in a stabbing to arrive. This was a cold, drizzly day, with sleet and freezing rain. At the end of the day, Captain Conant was displaying cold symptoms and went home ill. Pneumonia quickly developed from this illness, and Captain Conant died five days later on Oct. 26, 1916.
The police administration apparently felt this was duty related. The Chief of Police ordered all off duty officers in to work to line the streets from Captain Conant's residence to the church for the services. Captain Conant was buried with full police honors at Oakwood Cemetery in Fort Worth.
Affidavits concerning the death of Captain Conant were completed by his descendants and are on file.
