Summary:
On Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1925, Fort Worth Police Officer Bertram F. Brewster was on Bicycle Patrol with his partner, Officer J.B. Graham. Both officers were working the midnight shift. At about 1:00 p.m., both officers stopped at the offices of the Travis Avenue Baptist Church to eat their lunch in the church office. While eating lunch, the officers saw a car turn onto Hemphill street and head toward a Piggly Wiggly Grocery store. Remembering that there had been a recent spate of burglaries at Piggly Wiggly's, the officers hastily prepared to go follow the car.
As Officer Brewster grabbed his coat, he accidentally jostled his pistol holster. The gun came loose and struck the floor. As the gun struck the floor, it discharged. The bullet struck officer Brewster in the thigh and traveled upward to about the middle of his back. Officer Brewster was quickly taken to All Saints Hospital. Surgery was performed to remove the bullet, but the injuries proved to be too serious. Officer Brewster died as a result of these injuries at about 7:50 that evening.
